History of Chocolate Chip Cookies

History of Chocolate Chip Cookies

What about the history of chocolate chip cookies? It's difficult to imagine a world without these favorite cookies, but we have Ruth Graves Wakefield to thank for chocolate chip cookies.

Ruth Wakefield was an innkeeper in Massachusetts. As she prepared to bake a bath of cookies, she found she was out of the baker's chocolate she normally used.

She decided to cut a semi-sweet Nestle chocolate candy bar into small pieces to flavor the cookies. The small chips of candy did not melt; resulting in the first chocolate chip cookies.

The guests at her inn, Toll House Lodge, loved the cookies. Word spread when her recipe was published in a number of New England newspapers. Her recipe and the new cookies became extremely popular.

The Nestle Chocolate Company reached a deal with Ruth Wakefield. They printed her Toll House chocolate chip cookie recipe on the label of their chocolate bar. In return, Ruth received a lifetime supply of chocolate. Not a bad deal!
